The original Mars horror campaign

Doom 3 follows a survivor through the UAC’s Mars research facility after a demonic invasion. The original game leans into horror and close encounters within that facility, giving it a different rhythm from Doom’s earlier sprite-based games. Resurrection of Evil is a separate expansion returning to the aftermath of the disaster.

The later BFG Edition changes parts of the presentation and play experience, including its armor-mounted flashlight and checkpoint system. Those BFG features should not be used to describe dhewm3’s original-game campaign.

Modern systems without changing the core game

dhewm3 develops the released Doom 3 source into a native port. Its goal is to fix engine problems while preserving original gameplay. Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD are documented, with widescreen support, arbitrary display resolutions and an updated audio backend.

Gamepad support is included, although rumble is not. An additional settings menu opens with F10 by default and is independent of a mod’s own menus. That gives players a place to adjust port-specific options without depending on every older mod to expose them.

Check the edition before copying files

Use original Doom 3 data patched to version 1.3.1. The base directory should contain the original sequence of PK4 archives, including pak000 through pak008. A store bundle may include both original Doom 3 and BFG Edition, so selecting the correct installation matters even if the purchase has only one store listing.

BFG Edition data is incompatible with dhewm3. The source release also excludes the commercial game assets. Installing the native engine and supplying the matching original files are two separate steps.

Use the port’s own compatibility guidance

dhewm3 maintains a dedicated list of supported mods and a separate mod SDK. Check that list before building a modded campaign around an old package. A mod’s existence for the original Windows engine is not by itself a promise that its compiled game code works with this port. For an initial setup, establish that the unmodified campaign loads before adding a mod.
