Why Skate’s spaces invite another attempt

Skate 3’s Port Carverton is built around districts, plazas and skateparks that encourage finding and refining a line. The original game adds darkslides and underflips, while Skate.School provides a place to practice stick skills. Its retail team and career systems describe the original game; this Rust engine currently focuses on skating and exploration.

A skating sandbox built from research

This project rebuilds Skate 3 systems in Rust and Bevy, using reverse-engineering work on the original game rather than simply wrapping the Xbox 360 executable. Its current focus is tangible skating: riding, tricks, grinds, getting off the board, difficulty settings and moving between maps. That makes it an interesting way to explore familiar spaces, but working tricks are not a promise that every movement or game system matches Skate 3.

The lineage matters when choosing between Skate projects. Dumbad’s work on file formats, animation, collision, challenges and custom maps underpins this engine; Chasm’s renderer work also forms part of that history. This entry is the Rust rewrite, with its own behavior and development path.

Bring the maps, then start at University

The experimental Windows package can prepare your own Xbox 360 ISO or an extracted game folder containing default.xex beside its data directory. Setup converts the skater, animations and disc maps, exports the original scoring and session-marker HUD assets, and opens University. The initial conversion takes time, and ISO extraction needs internet access. Original game assets are not included.

Converted content stays beside that installation’s executable. If you unpack another copy elsewhere, it performs its own setup; updating in place refreshes changed asset groups. This distinction helps avoid repeatedly converting the same collection into separate installations.

Gamepad first, with room to experiment

Use an SDL3-compatible controller for skating. Escape opens the graphics, difficulty and map settings, and maps can change without restarting. The project also supports .skate maps; its included format demonstration is procedural content, separate from the original disc maps.

A source build follows the Windows Rust MSVC and LLVM workflow, using BUILD.bat and PLAY.bat. The prepared release follows its own asset wizard instead. Choose the route that fits your interest: playing with the experimental engine or modifying it. Original-game parity remains unfinished, and custom animation support does not mean custom animation clips are bundled.

Before you play

Do I need the original game files?

Supply your own Skate 3 Xbox 360 ISO, or default.xex with the extracted data folder alongside it. Original assets are not included.

Creator-reported · Project guide
How do I get started?

For a source build, use Windows with the Rust MSVC toolchain and LLVM; BUILD.bat builds and PLAY.bat starts the selected map. The repository also links an experimental Windows package with its own asset setup.

Creator-reported · Project guide
Which devices and browsers work?

The documented build toolchain targets Windows.

Creator-reported · Project guide
What are the controls?

Gameplay requires an SDL3-compatible gamepad. Escape opens graphics, difficulty and map settings.

Creator-reported · Project guide
What is included in this version?

The project implements skating, tricks and map exploration, but remains a work in progress without full behavioral parity with Skate 3.

Creator-reported · Project guide
What should I know before playing?

The first asset conversion can take time and ISO extraction needs internet access. Converted assets remain in the data folder beside the executable; a separately extracted installation runs its own setup.
