The Xbox campaign and private matches

MW2 Recompiled targets the 2009 Xbox 360 game, with campaign and multiplayer. Choose its Steam package for friend invitations or the LAN package for a shared network. Public matchmaking and ranked playlists are unavailable; Special Ops remains untested. This is a way to revisit the console release with people you know, rather than enter a replacement public matchmaking service.

The original networking code retains known vulnerabilities. The maintainer recommends trusted peers only: Steam lobbies filter non-members, while the LAN build is reachable by other devices on that network.

Prepare a controller and the supported disc

Use a USA/Europe Xbox 360 disc image for version 1.0.557, a 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, a Vulkan 1.2 GPU and 8 GB of disk space. A controller is needed for gameplay; keyboard support covers menus.

The launcher’s Install Game action imports the disc and applies title update 6. Saves remain in saves/ beside the executables. For multiplayer, every participant should run the same build.

Tune the image before raising the frame limit

The launcher stores resolution, frame-limit and field-of-view choices in .env beside the program. The underlying settings reference explains that higher resolution multiplies both dimensions of the image: moving from 720p to 1440p or 4K therefore increases the rendering workload substantially. Begin with the lower setting if frame pacing is uneven.

The field-of-view value uses the game’s 4:3 convention, so its numeric value is not the horizontal angle of a widescreen picture. It also affects aiming views. The frame limiter rounds timing to whole milliseconds, meaning selected high refresh values can produce a slightly different cap. These are useful reasons to change one setting at a time instead of assuming the highest numbers give the best result.
