Derek Yu’s freeware Spelunky Classic, ported from GameMaker to HTML5 by Darius Kazemi. The port is based on the original freeware Spelunky Classic. The original creator distinguishes that release from the 2012 HD reboot.
Spelunky Classic combines platforming with a cave that changes its layout each time you play. You are hunting treasure while trying to survive and travel deeper. The changing route makes observation valuable: knowing how to handle a situation is more useful than memorising the exact placement of every obstacle.
This is the original freeware game released in 2009. It is separate from the later HD reboot. Choose it for the compact original interpretation of that treasure-hunting loop, and expect each failed attempt to become knowledge for a different cave on the next run.
Darius Kazemi ported the GameMaker version to HTML5 using GameMaker: Studio, with additional fixes and polish from YoYo Games. The hosted page names Derek Yu as the original creator and Kazemi as the porter. This lineage matters: the browser game derives from Spelunky Classic, rather than being a lookalike built around its name.
Kazemi’s development article describes early problems with sound, saving, effects and collisions. Its later update credits YoYo Games with sound, saving and performance fixes. The early prototype notes should therefore not be treated as a current list of everything this hosted build lacks.

The page’s controls are deliberately brief: arrow keys for movement and Z, X and C for actions. Check the game’s own prompts as you begin, and get comfortable with those actions before pushing deeper. The layout favours a keyboard; the host does not provide a separate touch-control guide.
The original game is designed around repeated attempts, so a first run is a chance to learn how its world behaves. You can try the browser conversion without setting up the Windows freeware release; the original site remains the place to find that separate download and its source.
The creator hosts an HTML5 port of freeware Spelunky Classic with no local game-file import on its launch page. This is separate from the paid HD remake and Spelunky 2.
