DQ8Recomp is an experimental native project for the North American PlayStation 2 edition of Dragon Quest VIII. It can boot, load saves and reach field gameplay with sound from the original drivers. Sustained performance and full-game compatibility are still unfinished, so this is a project to explore or help test rather than a finished route for a long playthrough.
The distinction between a launcher release and a finished game matters here. The downloadable bundles automate local preparation, but the game executable is generated from your disc on your machine. A default developer CMake build produces a stub, not Dragon Quest VIII.
The supported input is an ISO of SLUS-21207, the North American release. PAL configuration is incomplete. Choose a launcher bundle for your actual operating system and CPU, unpack it fully, then provide the image. The launcher checks the disc, extracts its files, translates the code and compiles the result before offering Play.
Allow around 8 GB of free space and time for that initial build. The packages carry the build tools and libraries but still need a system C++ compiler, which the launcher can help install through the platform’s normal tooling. Having a launcher window open is therefore only the start of setup.
Game data and saves normally live in a DQ8Recomp folder in your home directory. The launcher lets you choose another location before building. A newer launcher keeps that data and rebuilds changed work rather than requiring a new save directory for every download.
F1 opens controls, display and sound options in the running game. The project’s Running and Project Status guides are the useful next references when evaluating progress. Expect incomplete compatibility even if a particular save loads successfully; that milestone does not establish every battle, cutscene or later area.
