Sonic Mania revisits classic zones with new layouts and bosses. Sonic’s speed, Tails’ flight and Knuckles’ strength give the characters different approaches to the same platforming spaces. The original also includes Competition and Co-Op modes. Those are features of the published game; this project is an alternative way to build its code and engine around your purchased assets.
RSDKModding’s decompilation adds a built-in mod loader and supports building several released Mania revisions, including the initial console version, initial PC version and the Plus update. It can target RSDKv5U as well as the standalone RSDKv5 engine. The revision you build therefore matters when following mod or compatibility instructions.
The repository can build Mania together with the Retro Engine dependency. Building only the Mania component is also possible, but that is a more specific development choice. For a first setup, follow the complete documented build path rather than treating one output file as a self-contained game.
You must supply assets from an official supported release. The Netflix Games edition is explicitly excluded, even though it carries the same game name. The project’s Plus build options also do not replace the requirement to own the relevant content.
The README allows saved data from the official PC versions to be copied into the decompilation’s folder. That gives existing PC players a route to continue progress. Keep an original backup before changing installations so you retain the source save as well as the working copy.
Clone the repository recursively: GitHub’s source ZIP omits required submodules. Windows, Linux, Switch and Android each have their own dependency or build guidance. The Android route follows the Retro Engine’s documentation, and touch controls are supplied through a separate example mod rather than Netflix-edition support.
OpenGL builds need the documented shader mod for videos and filters. If those are missing, follow the GLShaders instructions before assuming your game data is broken. The maintainers also aim to preserve original behavior, so bugs inherited from official releases are not automatically candidates for fixes.
