About this version

The unreleased N64 Dinosaur Planet prototype as a native recompilation. Work in progress; this is a port of a prototype, not a completed retail Star Fox Adventures release.

Original game
Dinosaur Planet (December 2000 prototype)

A particular unreleased prototype

Dinosaur Planet: Recompiled targets the December 2000 Nintendo 64 prototype. Its attraction is access to that specific unfinished game through a native port, with modern rendering and mod support. It should not be approached as the completed retail Star Fox Adventures or as a general Nintendo 64 emulator.

The distinction follows right through setup: only the unmodified supported prototype ROM works. A different revision or a ROM patched for an emulator is not an alternative input. The project does not distribute the game assets.

Apply changes as recomp mods

The port uses N64Recomp and RT64, with the Dinosaur Planet decompilation contributing knowledge about the game. Mod support is a major part of the offering. The menu can install and toggle NRM mods, and texture packs can change the presentation.

Changes commonly applied to the ROM for console or emulator play are instead supplied as separate recomp mods. Begin with the supported unpatched image, then choose the equivalent mod if you want a particular change. Keeping those layers separate also makes it easier to return to the baseline prototype.

Check graphics support before starting

The documented PC requirements include Direct3D 12 with Shader Model 6 or Vulkan 1.2, plus SSE4.1 CPU support. These requirements come from the modern host and renderer, so the age of the Nintendo 64 game is not a reliable guide to whether an older computer can run it. Updated graphics drivers are the project’s first recommendation for startup crashes.

The window can use a 4:3 launch option or an explicitly chosen width and height. This gives you a way to select the presentation before adding visual mods.

Preserve progress while following development

Saves normally live in the DinoPlanetRecompiled user directory on Windows or Linux. A portable.txt file beside the executable moves saves, configuration and mods into that folder instead, which is useful for a self-contained installation.

The recomp remains work in progress and is missing some enhancements available in other N64 ports. Its prototype foundation is also an important limit: a functioning native renderer does not turn unfinished original content into a completed retail adventure.
