About this version

z2rs reconstructs the NES game for desktop, Android and WebAssembly. The browser guide documents local ROM checks, a randomizer and optional HD packs. Online co-op depends on the features enabled in a particular web build.

The published browser host is unavailable

The published z2rs.com host is unavailable. The creator’s repository still documents desktop releases and how to build the browser version locally, using your own supported game ROM. Those are separate setup paths; this listing no longer has a working hosted Play route.

The side-scrolling Zelda adventure

Zelda II sends Link in search of the Triforce of Courage to awaken Zelda. It combines an overworld with side-scrolling action and role-playing elements, giving it a markedly different structure from the first Zelda. Its appeal lies partly in that change of perspective: movement and close combat take place side-on, while the overworld connects the journey.

That is the original adventure z2rs reconstructs. Its optional widescreen and cooperative features are additions made by this project, rather than features to expect from an unmodified NES copy.

A reconstruction with optional extensions

z2rs is a Rust reconstruction of Zelda II that requires your own supported USA ROM. Its browser guide describes the same engine running on the web, with widescreen and local co-op included in the default build. Widescreen extends the scenery beyond the original view rather than merely stretching the old picture.

Other options depend on how a build was compiled. In particular, HD packs and netplay are optional build features, so do not assume every hosted copy offers them. The browser menu also supports randomizer settings whose seed and flags are applied when the ROM is loaded; choose them before starting that run.

Load the matching ROM locally

The browser checks the selected ROM locally against the supported version; the guide says it is not uploaded. Use the exact supported USA release rather than assuming any translated or modified ROM will load. Keep your ROM selection separate from optional HD art: if an HD pack fails to load, the engine can fall back to the original art.

A click, tap or keyboard press unlocks browser audio. A gamepad button alone does not satisfy that browser audio step, so make one of the supported interactions if a controller session begins silently.

Keyboard controls for one or two players

For player one, arrow keys move and Z and X supply the NES A and B buttons. The browser guide also documents a second keyboard layout using WASD and G/F with R/T for the remaining buttons. Local co-op therefore has its own input arrangement; it is not the same as joining an online session. Check the build's actual options before planning netplay.
