## The first Quake multiplayer world

The original Quake combines military spaces with a much stranger world of gothic castles, lava and monsters. Its Ranger travels through hostile dimensions, a dark fantasy identity quite different from Quake II's Strogg war. That is the game's background; the QuakeWorld browser host is a route into multiplayer rather than a tour of the original campaign.

The modern commercial Quake release packages enhanced graphics and additional content alongside the original game. A browser QuakeWorld session should not be treated as that entire package simply because both use the Quake name.

## Multiplayer with client-side prediction

Pieter's QuakeWorld page offers multiplayer for up to eight players through the FTE engine, without installing a desktop client. The launcher asks for a player name and provides a Play button. This is the network-focused QuakeWorld route, separate from the host's DOS Quake link.

The host highlights client-side prediction and low-latency play. Prediction lets the client respond to your movement before every server reply arrives, which is useful in a game where movement timing matters. It does not remove the effects of a slow connection or guarantee the same response on every device.

## Choose the session that matches the game

Set your player name before launching. Use this project when you want the original Quake multiplayer environment; choose the separate Quake II page for the later game's setting. The eight-player description belongs to this hosted service, rather than to all QuakeWorld servers. The creator describes the site as an unofficial, non-commercial preservation project.
