Canonical: https://playable.wtf/games/openttd-openttd/

Project ID: project:openttd-openttd

A transport-management recreation with replacement base assets.

## About this version

OpenTTD supplies a modern transport simulation and a multiplayer server ecosystem. Its installation documentation distinguishes free replacement base sets from optional original TTD data.

Native setup. Simulation.

## Build a transport network that earns its keep

OpenTTD puts you in charge of a transport company connecting towns and industries by road, rail, air and water. Choosing a promising route is only the beginning: the vehicles, stations and infrastructure have to work together as the network grows. The appeal is watching a small connection develop into a coordinated system.

Based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, OpenTTD extends that foundation with larger maps, multiplayer and more capable building tools. Autorail, longer trains and improved pathfinding support more elaborate railway layouts. The official manual is useful both for learning the interface and understanding why a seemingly sensible route is not behaving as expected.

## You can start without an original TTD disc

OpenTTD supports free replacement assets: OpenGFX for graphics, OpenSFX for sound effects and OpenMSX for music. Some installers fetch them during setup; other packages require following the asset-installation instructions. These sets make a complete starting point without importing Transport Tycoon Deluxe data.

If you own the original game and prefer its appearance or soundtrack, you can instead supply the documented data files in the baseset folder. Graphics, effects and music are separate choices, so a missing music set is not the same problem as missing base graphics.

## Why choose the native application?

This entry is the upstream desktop game, with maintained Windows, macOS and Linux builds. It keeps the normal application workflow for local files, configuration and add-on content. Independently hosted browser versions have their own storage and download interfaces; their browser export steps do not describe this native installation.

OpenTTD supports cooperative and competitive multiplayer. The main menu’s Check Online Content route provides many kinds of add-ons, letting you find content from within the application. Social-platform integration uses optional plugins, so it is a separate setup choice rather than a prerequisite for building a company.

## Keep a stable base for a long game

The project recommends stable releases for most players because they receive more testing than nightlies. Development builds expose newer features but may be less reliable. This distinction matters when you plan to keep expanding the same transport network.

OpenTTD’s documented compatibility policy is that newer revisions load older, uncorrupted savegames. Keep copies of your saves and the content they use when moving installations. The project’s directory guide identifies where game data and add-ons belong, which is more reliable than assuming everything sits beside the executable.

## Do I need the original game files?

Use OpenGFX graphics, OpenSFX sounds and OpenMSX music, or original Transport Tycoon Deluxe data. The Windows installer can fetch the replacement sets.
