# The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind — Virtastic OpenMW-Web

Canonical: https://playable.wtf/games/morrowind-openmw-web/

Project ID: project:morrowind-openmw-web

OpenMW in the browser; the current hosted world requires an invite and sign-in.

## About this version

Virtastic adapts OpenMW to WebAssembly. The current hosted service is invite-only and uses an account; its repository also documents self-hosting and local-file routes. The hosted sign-in flow differs from the repository’s general launcher examples.

## Choose a direction in Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is an open-ended role-playing game. You create a character, develop abilities through use and decide how closely to follow its central story. Exploring the world and building a character can become the point of a session in their own right.

That openness makes this a game to settle into rather than judge from a single fight. The original publisher presents both following the main adventure and wandering independently as valid ways to play. OpenMW is a replacement engine for that game, not a new campaign.

## A browser engine with several data routes

Virtastic's openmw-web runs OpenMW locally in desktop Chrome or Chromium. Its project supports a local Data Files folder, a server with staged data and a signed-in route that uploads an owned copy. Those routes store saves differently: local-folder play writes files beside your data, signed-in play uses the server and the free example world uses browser storage.

Availability depends on the server you open. The linked hosted service has an account-access gate; the repository also supplies a self-hosting route. An example world is a small engine demo, not the Morrowind campaign.

## Keep the loose files with the archives

Your Data Files folder needs Morrowind.esm and Morrowind.bsa, plus the accompanying Sound, Music and Video folders. Selecting only the archives can leave audio or introductory video missing. If Windows protects the installation inside Program Files, copy Data Files to an accessible personal folder first.

Use current desktop Chrome or Edge with the required memory support; the documented baseline is version 133. Firefox, Safari and mobile are unsupported. Options → Video includes resolution scale, a useful first adjustment on lighter hardware.

## Treat party play as experimental

The project also documents experimental multiplayer for configured servers. A visitor joins a friend's world and advances that host's campaign, rather than entering one shared public world. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing between solo play and a party, and confirm that the server actually offers the experimental mode before planning a group session.

## Do I need the original game files?

You need your own Morrowind Data Files, including Morrowind.esm and Morrowind.bsa. The current hosted service describes a one-time upload after sign-in; self-hosted local-folder mode can instead read from disk.

## How do I get started?

New players need an invite code, then Google, Discord or Microsoft sign-in. The host links its Discord for invite information. After access, the host asks for your owned Data Files. No public anonymous launch was available in the reviewed flow.

## Which devices and browsers work?

Desktop Chrome or Chromium with MEMORY64, including Chrome/Edge 133+, is required. Firefox, Safari and mobile are not supported.

## What are the controls?

The project persists keybindings and settings in the browser. Options → Video includes resolution scaling for lighter hardware.

## Can I play multiplayer?

The project offers experimental hosted party worlds. Account/server setup is required; the repository describes solo and friends-based play, with rough edges remaining.

## What is included in this version?

An OpenMW engine port for your Morrowind data, with optional server and multiplayer components.

## How do saves work?

Saves depend on the route: local-folder mode uses real files, signed-in play uses server saves, and the offline example uses browser storage.

## What should I know before playing?

The public host is invite-only. Its account/upload route should not be confused with the local-folder and free example-world options documented for other server configurations.
