# Star Fox 64 — Starship

Canonical: https://playable.wtf/games/harbourmasters-starship/

Project ID: project:harbourmasters-starship

The Star Fox 64 native port with explicit regional ROM support.

## About this version

Starship’s setup supports US 1.0 and US 1.1 base ROMs. Japanese and European voice replacement is optional and does not make those regions valid base ROMs.

Native setup. Shooter.

## The original flight through the Lylat System

Star Fox 64, known as Lylat Wars in Europe, mixes forward-scrolling flight missions with open arenas where you can turn freely. Fox’s Arwing is the main vehicle, but the original campaign also takes combat to land and underwater in the Landmaster and Blue Marine. Dodging, aiming and keeping track of threats matter more than exploring at your own pace.

Hidden paths give the campaign a reason to be replayed: seeing a different route is part of the game’s attraction. This is the Nintendo 64 adventure behind Starship; the port’s supported ROMs and voice-replacement options are separate choices explained below.

## A dedicated Star Fox 64 port

Starship runs Star Fox 64 through HarbourMasters’ native port framework. Its setup creates a local asset archive from a supported Nintendo 64 ROM, while the desktop application provides the rendering, menus and input layer. It is a dedicated installation for this game, with its own configuration and optional custom assets.

The release route is intended for players. The project also publishes continuous-integration builds for playtesting, but warns that those may contain bugs or crashes. Choose the normal release before trying a development build so that setup problems are easier to separate from unfinished changes.

## Base ROM and voice language are different choices

The base game must be a US 1.0 or US 1.1 revision in .z64 format. Check your dump against the SHA-1 values in the README before generating assets. A .n64 dump needs byte-order conversion; renaming its extension does not perform that conversion.

European Lylat Wars and Japanese assets can supply optional replacement voices alongside the US base. They do not substitute for the supported US ROM, and only one replacement voice language can be active at a time. This is particularly useful to know if you remember the game under its European name and arrive with a European copy.

## Set up controls before taking off

The documented keyboard layout maps the analog stick to WASD and the C buttons to the arrow keys. X, C and Z represent the N64 A, B and Z buttons, with Space for Start. F1 opens the menu bar, F11 toggles fullscreen and F4 resets the game. Treat the reset key separately from the menu shortcut when exploring settings.

Custom assets go in the mods folder as .o2r or .otr archives. The project links its asset tools for creators, but the listed Blender tool does not currently support Star Fox 64. Use packs made for Starship rather than assuming another HarbourMasters game’s assets will fit.

## Match the renderer to your computer

Windows, Linux and macOS have documented launch flows; the Switch route first generates sf64.o2r on a PC. DirectX 11 is the Windows default, Metal the macOS default, and OpenGL is the cross-platform alternative. Changing the API in settings needs a restart. If a crash blocks the menu, the README also gives the configuration-file values needed to select OpenGL.
