# Doom — Silent Space Marine

Canonical: https://playable.wtf/games/doom-multiplayer-browser/

Project ID: project:doom-multiplayer-browser

A Cloudflare WebAssembly experiment with solo and multiplayer entry points.

## About this version

Silent Space Marine runs Doom solo or with up to four players through Cloudflare’s browser multiplayer experiment. Desktop mouse input and mobile virtual gamepads are documented; abrupt disconnects can disrupt a session.

Browser launch. Shooter.

## Doom

Classic WAD play, shared browser sessions and Doom 3 have different engines and file requirements.

- [Read Doom guide](https://playable.wtf/guides/doom-quake-browser-versions/)
- [Classic Doom in a browser](https://playable.wtf/games/wad-commander-v1/): Choose owned WADs, shareware or Freedoom, with a documented touch layout.
- [Keep the original DOS behavior](https://playable.wtf/games/chocolate-doom-chocolate-doom/): A native port for compatible classic content, old demos and saves.
- [Try the Doom 3 demo](https://playable.wtf/games/doom-3-browser/): A desktop browser route into the later game without a retail-data setup.
- [Play owned original Doom 3](https://playable.wtf/games/dhewm-dhewm3/): Use original 1.3.1 data in a native port; BFG Edition files do not fit.

## Classic Doom behavior in a web experiment

Silent Space Marine uses Chocolate Doom as the basis for its browser port. Chocolate Doom aims to reproduce the Doom experience of the 1990s, so the project's starting point is the classic game's behavior rather than a modernized remake with a different presentation. The browser and networking work sits around that engine.

This matters when comparing Doom projects: the engine's preservation goal and the host's multiplayer transport answer different questions. One concerns how Doom behaves; the other concerns how players share a session.

## Choose solo play or start a group

The site provides Play Solo and Start Multiplayer. Multiplayer runs through Cloudflare's network and supports up to four players. The host shares an invitation URL; guests enter their names and wait for the host to start. Use the invitation when joining friends, rather than independently starting another multiplayer game.

## Desktop mouse or phone controls

The implementation supports mouse input and sound, with F for fullscreen during play. Phones use virtual gamepads, and the landing page suggests hiding the browser toolbar for more room. These are controls documented for this specific experiment, not a promise that every Doom WebAssembly port has the same mobile layout.

## The group moves at its slowest connection

The multiplayer simulation waits for every player's input. A slow connection can therefore slow the whole group, even when the other players have faster links. The creator also describes rough handling of abrupt disconnects and reconnects.

Treat a match as a shared live session. The experiment does not make that session a durable saved game simply by using Cloudflare Durable Objects; the implementation article distinguishes its live coordination from persistent storage.

## How do I get started?

Use Play Solo or Start Multiplayer on the project page.

## Which devices and browsers work?

The project’s own implementation article documents desktop browsers and mobile phones with virtual gamepads.

## What are the controls?

The browser port supports mouse input. Press F during play for fullscreen; phones use virtual gamepads.

## Can I play multiplayer?

The demo supports up to four players through Cloudflare’s network. Everyone’s simulation waits for the other players’ inputs, so a slow connection affects the group.

## What should I know before playing?

The creator documents rough handling of abrupt disconnects and reconnects. Do not treat a multiplayer session as a durable saved game.
