## The descent beneath Tristram

Diablo is an action RPG built around repeated trips from the town of Tristram into a changing dungeon. Warrior, Rogue and Sorcerer approach enemies differently, while equipment and spells give each descent new decisions. The compact town-and-dungeon structure makes preparation and retreat part of the rhythm, alongside the fighting.

Hellfire adds a separate storyline, the Monk and additional locations, enemies and items. It is an expansion to the original Diablo, not Diablo II. Which of those adventures you can play in DevilutionX depends on the data files you provide.

## Classic Diablo with optional conveniences

DevilutionX runs Diablo and Hellfire through a modernized engine with bug fixes and optional quality-of-life features. Its widescreen display can be disabled, and the health and experience bars shown in project screenshots are options rather than mandatory changes. That lets you choose how much extra information appears during combat.

This is the native DevilutionX project. Browser-hosted DiabloWeb installations have their own setup and storage behavior; instructions for a web browser’s saved files should not be assumed to describe the native application.

## Full game, expansion or shareware

For the full original game, supply DIABDAT.MPQ from your Diablo CD or installed copy. Hellfire additionally needs hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq and hfvoice.mpq. Copying only the expansion archive leaves out content the engine expects.

The shareware spawn.mpq is an alternative for trying the shareware portion, not a substitute that unlocks the full adventure. DevilutionX’s own support archive is also needed, while some languages require additional fonts or voice packs. Follow the installation guide for the exact package and language you choose.

## Put the files where the app can find them

The installation guide distinguishes the executable folder from platform-specific data directories. Windows can use an existing GOG installation without manually copying its MPQs; Linux and macOS have documented local data paths. Android requires starting the app once so it creates its storage folder before the files are transferred.

Use a regular release for your first installation. Development test builds are available for contributors, but the project explicitly advises backing up files before using them. Keep your game data and progress safe when trying a new build or a community mod.
